Description

Qutub Minar was built to celebrate Ghori's victory over the Rajputs. The Minar is a five-storey building with a height of 72.5 metres. The first storey of the Qutb Minar was completed in the lifetime of Qutbuddin. His son-in-law and successor, Iltumush, added the next three storeys. and later in 1368 Firoz Shah Tughlak constructed 4th & 5th storey in both sand stone and marble. It tapers from a diameter of 15m to 2.5m. There are five distinct storeys, each of which has a protruding balcony. Near it can be seen the ruins of Kila Ri Pithora, the fort of Prithviraj Chauhan, and an amazing iron pillar from Gupta times which has not yet rusted.

Historical Importance

Qutab Minar: The tower and the victory are very significant, because both heralded the birth of a new dynasty - Slave Dynasty. And it laid the foundations of the Delhi Sultanate. The highest stone tower in India, Delhi’s landmark; the Qutub Minar was built by Qutbuddin Aibak, for the victroy of Mohammed Ghori in 1192. This 72.5 m high pillar is a symbol of the Delhi Sultanate.
